When’s the right time to ask for money?

Hey Reader,

I was mentoring a fundraiser recently, and we were walking through her donor portfolio together when we paused on one specific name.

She told me this donor had been actively engaged—someone she’d emailed recently to ask for a connection to another potential supporter. Not a financial ask, just staying in touch, building the relationship. They’d had a few back-and-forths over the year.

But when I asked if she was planning to make a fundraising ask soon, she hesitated.

She said, “I feel like I JUST asked her for something…”

Here’s the thing: this fundraiser hadn’t asked for money. She’d engaged her donor in a real, authentic way—exactly what we want! So now? It’s actually the perfect time to make a financial ask.

Because donors don’t disengage when you ask for things that connect them more deeply to your mission. They become more invested.

I told her there’s a big difference between “asking all the time” and “cultivating a relationship.” And if you’ve been doing the latter…don’t be afraid to do the former.

So here’s the question I’ll leave you with today:

Are you finding reasons not to ask?
Or are you finding reasons
to ask?

Go ahead and reply to this email - if you need help if you should make an ask, let me know the details and I'll share with you my honest thoughts. No BS, I promise!

Cheers,
Kay
