How I Would Secure My First Event Sponsor

Hey Reader,

Welcome back to my "How I Would" series, where I break down exactly how I’d tackle common fundraising challenges—step by step. As a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), I’ve raised thousands in event sponsorships, and today, I’m showing you how I’d land my first event sponsor if I were to start from scratch again!

👉 Pro tip - you don't have to start from scratch! The Event Sponsorship Package includes ready-made outreach language, sponsorship levels, professional reply card, and nonprofit overview. Over 600 organizations purchased with 5 star reviews - download yours today for 30% off with code SPONSOR30! (Offer ends TONIGHT at midnight)

Here’s exactly how I’d go about securing my first sponsor:

Step 1: Start with Who You Know

Sponsorship is all about relationships. Instead of cold-emailing random businesses, I’d start with:

✔️ Past supporters – Has a business donated before? They might upgrade to a sponsor!
✔️ Board & volunteers – Do they have connections to business owners?
✔️ Vendors & partners – Anyone you already work with (printers, caterers, suppliers, etc.)

Even if they don’t say yes, they might introduce you to someone who will! You can also go "door knocking" to businesses in your community - my first ever event sponsor was a local car dealership that happened to be down the road from my organization!

Step 2: Craft a Simple, No-Pressure Ask

Your first ask shouldn’t be about money—it should be about partnership. Here’s what I’d say in an email or call:

📌 Example Email:
Subject: Quick question for you
Hi [Business Name],

I’m [Your Name] with [Your Organization], and we’re hosting [Event Name] to [impact of event]. I wanted to reach out because I think this could be a great partnership opportunity for [Business Name].

Would you be open to a quick chat to explore how we can work together? No pressure—just wanted to see if it might be a good fit for your marketing efforts!

Best,
[Your Name]

Step 3: Offer a Win-Win Sponsorship Opportunity

When it's time for the meeting or phone call, make sure you tailor your offer and focus on what’s in it for them. Use the sponsorship levels in the Event Sponsorship Package to provide enticing offers for the business.

If they’re interested, make sure to have an agreement in the form of a reply card ready to make it easy for them to say yes.

Step 4: Follow Up & Lock It In

Most sponsorships don’t happen in one conversation. I’d follow up 1-2 times, answer any questions, and be flexible in adjusting the benefits if needed. Once they commit, get everything in writing, send a warm thank-you, and deliver real value so they’ll want to sponsor again next year!

🎉 Ready to land your first sponsor?

Hey Reader, I know from conversations with you that there's a mix of people following NonProfit Life, from experienced fundraisers with $50M+ budgets to those who are just starting their nonprofit journey. If you’re in the latter group, you’ve probably asked the question: “What do I do if I’m starting from zero?” If I were starting from scratch today, here’s the strategy I’d follow. It’s simple and effective, and I call it the 2-prong strategy. This strategy starts with creating two lists...

Hey Reader, AI is everywhere right now. Your inbox is probably full of promises that it'll solve all your problems. If I'm being honest, I tune out a lot of the emails I get about AI, so I haven't thought to talk about it. But I also use AI in my day to day fundraising, AND I've seen it used horribly in fundraising contexts and completely botch securing a donation. This made me wonder...would YOU find it helpful to learn how to use AI in your day to day fundraising? Answer below and you'll...

Hey Reader, Even though "making the ask" is really just 5% of what you have to do in fundraising, it can feel SO awkward and overwhelming. Trust me, I get it! (Not sure what the remaining 95% is? Reply to this email "95%" and I'll share more!) The truth is, even the best Executive Directors and fundraisers can be tempted to hesitate when it comes time to actually make the ask. Even when you know the value of your work, putting it into words can feel clunky or overly formal. If that’s you—here...
