Your New Board Member Onboarding Check List

Let’s talk about your board. Whether they’re amazing or... a work in progress, your fundraising success depends on them.

I'll never forget what my first nonprofit boss ever told me: "a nonprofit can only rise to the level of excellence as it's board."

The best thing you can do to engage your board is start with clear and upfront expectations. Here's my checklist to help you onboard new board members and set them - and yourself! - up for success from the jump:

Onboarding New Board Member Checklist:

  • Welcome & Introduction – Send a formal welcome with a personalized message from the board chair or executive director.
  • Board Member Handbook – Provide a handbook with bylaws, policies, and an overview of roles and responsibilities.
  • Mission & Strategic Goals – Review the nonprofit’s mission, vision, and current strategic plan.
  • Financial Overview – Share the organization’s budget, financial statements, and fundraising expectations.
  • Board Meetings & Expectations – Outline meeting schedules, attendance policies, and participation expectations.
  • Conflict of Interest & Ethics Policies – Review and have the new board member sign conflict of interest and ethics agreements.
  • Fundraising & Advocacy Role – Explain the board’s role in fundraising, donor engagement, and advocacy efforts.
  • Meet the Team – Introduce key staff, other board members, and key stakeholders.
  • Technology & Communication Tools – Provide access to board portals, email lists, and any tools used for collaboration.
  • Mentorship & Ongoing Support – Pair the new member with a mentor and schedule follow-ups to ensure a smooth transition.
